Where do you want to go tonight?

AtNight New York was conceived as the definitive guide to premium nightlife entertainment for young successful urban professionals. As Managing Editor (1st Edition) and subsequently promoted to Editor-in-Chief (2nd Edition, 3rd Edition), Craig McGuire oversaw a staff of award-winning graphics/product professionals and artists and team of New York-based journalists.
Adhering to the highest editorial standards of objectivity and professional critical review and produced in a highly stylized layout for maximum appeal, the content reflected a spirited collaboration of youthful exuberance and seasoned journalism.

Each of the 300 reviews is written with a combination of candor and wit not often found in traditional guidebooks. Affordably priced at $11.95, the 156-page guide was organized geographically for ease of use by the reader; numbered maps and brief written descriptions of the area preceded each geographic segment. Detailed sidebars next to each review highlighted pertinent information, including drink prices, nearest public transportation and hours of operation.

Leading the editorial team, Craig McGuire edited all copy, commissioned and approved all illustrations and artwork, and oversaw production. Furthermore, he wrote nearly a third of all reviews for all three editions he oversaw, while writing all Introductions, Neighborhood Descriptions, and other ancillary copy.

AtNight New York, 1st Edition
“All ways led to the saloon.
The thousand roads of romance
and adventure drew together
in the saloon, and thence
led out and on over the world.”
Jack London, 1913
(Excerpt from John Barleycorn)

A night on the town is more important than you may think. You work too hard to let these brief opportunities pass you by. Each journey into the heart of New York’s nightlife should spring from your mind as if it were yesterday, prompting that nostalgic, “You remember when…” Wouldn’t it be nice to recall the night you sat wedged between two supermodels at Chaos? Remember the time you pranced on the bar with your bra in hand at Hogs & Heifers? How about that drag queen that came over and belted out a tune for your table at Lucky Cheng’s, or that magical night you proposed while overlooking the breathtaking Manhattan nightscape at The Greatest Bar
on Earth? That’s what it’s all about. Isn’t it?

Other cities are noted for their nightlife, but New York City always has been, and always will be, the measuring stick. Through our tireless and painstaking research, we looked at the nightlife culture as a whole and selected a choice sampling of 298 establishments that comprise the essence of New York’s renowned nightlife. The sights, sounds, flavors and feelings are overwhelming. We’ve given you something to do every night of the week for the rest of the year, but you’re sure to find a second home somewhere. We’ve given certain well-deserving spots a pat on the head, but we’ve also knocked a few off their stools.

AtNight New York, 2nd Edition
Hurtling headlong towards the turn of the Millennium, it's an extraordinary time to be alive. At the same time, with contemporary life evolving so rapidly, it's almost impossible to keep up. That's why it's so important to have the best information at your fingertips to make the right call when it counts. Whether you're planning an intimate candle-lit rendezvous or a power dinner with a potential client, this comprehensive guide to premium nightlife in New York City will enable you to choose the right setting for every occasion.

Following years of decadent decline, nightlife in New York is making a strong comeback, making it ever more difficult to navigate the streets of New York at night. As recently as 1987, Village Voice columnist Michael Musto fired the after-hours shot heard round the nightlife world,“Downtown Is Dead." The now-infamous epitaph reflected the downward spiral of the nightlife scene, and not just in neighborhoods south of Union Square.

Today, however, it seems everywhere you turn there are exciting things happening. In Chelsea, the gay community has boldly swept in and planted its flag firmly, breathing life into a long stagnant industrial wasteland. TriBeCa, just a few short years ago a virtual nightlife outpost with less than a handful of the city's top venues, is finally filling out. All along Avenue A and Avenue B scores of businesses are opening, resurrecting the Alphabet City scene.

From the ongoing gentrification of the East Village and the LES to the dramatic commercial cover-up of Times Square, some say change is coming at the expense of cultural identity. This onrushing tide, greatly influencing the reformation of Manhattan nightlife, is gaining momentum. There is, though, still plenty of room for improvement as the city has yet to produce the cultural icons that defined the scene just a generation ago. Make no mistake, though, those personalities, the Jack Kerouacs and Peter Gatiens of tomorrow, are anxiously waiting in the wings to grab their 15 minutes. We'll be there when the dam breaks, and so should you, so here's your passport to New York @ Night.

AtNight New York, 3rd Edition

"Wine brings to light the hidden secrets of the soul,
gives being to our hopes, bids the coward flight, drives dull care away,
and teaches new means for the accomplishment of our wishes.”
- Horace

From Harlem down to the Battery, the Gotham AtNight scene is raging in the new millennium. More than just the city that never sleeps, NYC is the city that never stops sleeping around. The Dot-conomy is on the ropes, Rudy G.’s "War on Clubs" is in full gear, and you can forget about finding a parking spot on Saturday night. But it's still a great time to be alive in New York. Decadence is back in full effect. Dancing, romancing, wining and dining, AtNight-crawlers have never had such a wide range of entertainment options to tap into. We've taste-tested these dark, murky waters so you can make all the night moves.

Not million, NYC AtNight entertainment is a multi-billion dollar industry, and growing. Even without the estimated $2.7 billion in cash the theater scene pulls down annually, revenue generated from nightlife activity alone breezed by $3 billion last year. Hot parties and headcounts are driving the action, so stop settling. Insist on the very best for our evening. With AtNight New York, that’s now just a short cab ride away.

Use this expanded version of AtNight New York to arrange the ideal setting for those few and far between precious moments. It could be a surprise DJ blowing up the spot at Twilo, or maybe a delicate, intimate encounter at Chez Es Saada before a carriage ride through Central Park. Your entire evening could be crashing and burning...until you slide into St. Nick's and the smooth jazz brings it all back for you. The exploding lights, the crush of the crowds, the roar of ear splitting bass...it's all like some great, big wonderful kick to the head.

You can't possibly keep up with everything that's going on, but we can. Hot-sync your social calendar with AtNight. We'll bring IT to you and break IT down like no one else can, with AtNight Media's distinct stamp of sophistication. This is New York City, club kingpin ground zero and the land of never-ending live music. Just remember, it's all in the details and we’ve got you covered.
